Title IX is the landmark civil rights law passed in 1972 that prohibits discrimination on the basis of sex in any educational program that receives federal money. This key legislation helped ensure that women in the United States are afforded the same educational opportunities as men, such as sports, dedicated facilities, and female-specific programs.
On April 19th, the Biden Administration announced revisions to Title IX that expanded the definition of sex to include self-professed “gender identity.” These changes will mandate that schools permit biological males to use female restrooms, showers, and locker rooms.
Shortly after announcing these revisions, Texas Governor Greg Abbott informed President Biden that Texas will NOT recognize these revisions and instructed Texas Education Agency Commissioner Mike Morath, along with Texas superintendents, to disregard these revisions.
I wrote letters to President Biden and Governor Abbott in regards to these changes. In my letter to President Biden, I urged him and his administration to reverse these changes and end this political war on women. In my letter to Governor Abbott, I commended him for his efforts and reinforced my support in this momentous battle against an administration that seeks to erase women’s uniqueness from out great nation.
I also reached out to my colleagues in the Texas House of Representatives, along with several nominees for Texas State Representative to give them an opportunity to sign onto these letters. I was blown away when I received over ninety signatures from current State Representatives and nominees to the Texas House of Representatives!
